“We see re-imaginings constantly with superhero characters and other iconic characters, being told again because when the characters are so good and iconic, they’re universal, and the audiences want to see them over and over again. It’s not so different these days to see new faces in established roles, Cotrona says. Once they got involved in the work and individual scenes, “it was only when we finished and we started doing interviews that we were reminded of who we’re following up.” “The handicap was that I was such a big fan of the film and of everybody that was involved with it,” he says. In “From Dusk Till Dawn,” Cotrona doesn’t think about himself stepping into Clooney’s shoes. Because had I known how hard it is to get an opportunity in this business, I don’t think I ever would have had the guts if I wasn’t as naive as I was.” “I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. It’s crazy when I look back now,” he says. “So I slowly started slipping out of those classes and taking a few acting classes, and slipping down to New York to do some auditions I stole from a friend. At college at Northeastern, he was a double major in political science and criminal justice until he heard of friends from New York who had been auditioning and doing small roles for years. Growing up in a normal family - “my mom’s a schoolteacher in Meriden and my dad was a contractor” - he didn’t see much outlet for acting near home. It had a big impact on me, storytelling and being creative in that fashion, it really stuck with me.” As a kid, I thought I was screwing around, but for some reason it never left me. “On this show, I have it the easiest, trust me.”Īcting was not a part of Cotrona’s growing up in Wallingford, though he adds, “I was always making small ridiculous home movies since I was a kid with some people I grew up with. Cotrona says he spends up to 40 minutes a day getting Gecko’s distinctive half-body, full-sleeve tattoo sprayed on each day.īut, he adds, some of the cast - which includes Zane Holtz, Eiza Gonzalez and Wilmer Valderrama - have to sit for makeup for up to five hours each day, with the same amount of time to take it all off. It also means hot days of shooting in Austin, Texas, and a lot of time in makeup. So for us as actors that’s very enticing and very, very fun.” it’s just completely virgin ground creatively. “It was always his intention to do that, to set the foundation so he could go completely off on a tangent with all these characters and stories,” Cotrona says.Īfter all, he adds, Rodriguez has ” had all these ideas in his head, about what those stories are and where we could go with these characters since he shot original ‘Dusk.’ He’s had notes lying around for 20 years, so the great thing about the second season is that the road is completely clear, it’s all new territory, no moments to retread, no sort of comparisons to make. “The original film was almost 20 years ago, so there’s a whole generation of people that aren’t even aware of the story, so he wanted to weave in and out of the original storyline to remind people of the setting, the characters, everything. “In the first season, we weaved in and out of the film story a little bit, and that was by Robert’s choice,” Cotrona says. In the series, which got some positive reviews when it premiered last year, the brothers are alive again and on much the same path, though it begins to veer wildly in season two, Cotrona says. (It is, after all, a Quentin Tarantino script.) Seth is forced to impale his brother with a pool cue in the movie and ends up on a prison ship. The Gecko brothers were violent criminals on a spree, kidnapping a family and their RV to get across the border, when they make the mistake of stopping at a strip club full of vampires. Things didn’t end too well for Seth and his brother Richie in the original film.
